NVR: 91 85 4474016-3. The Siemens ES64F4, known in Germany primarily as the 189 series, is a powerful and versatile electric multi-system locomotive from the EuroSprinter family of Siemens Mobility. It was built between 2002 and 2005 and, thanks to its technical flexibility, is a key component of cross-border freight transport in Europe. As a four-current system locomotive, the ES64F4 can be operated on all four types of catenary systems commonly used in Europe: 15 kV AC (16.7 Hz), 25 kV AC (50 Hz), 3 kV DC and 1.5 kV DC. This multi-system capability makes it particularly suitable for international transport routes from Germany via the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy to Poland and Czechia. Technically, the ES64F4 is characterised by a Bo'Bo' axle configuration, a service weight of around 87 tonnes and a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Its powerful drive delivers up to 6400 kW of power with alternating current and up to 6000 kW (3 kV) or 4200 kW (1.5 kV) with direct current, combined with a starting tractive effort of 300 kN – values that make it a reliable workhorse for heavy freight trains. The locomotive belongs to the EuroSprinter family, a modular platform from Siemens that includes various electric locomotives for the European market. The ES64F4 is specially designed for high performance, electrical flexibility and adaptability to different national train control systems, enabling it to be used in many European countries. The 189 series was mainly used by Deutsche Bahn, but is also in service with other operators such as MRCE and in Switzerland as the Re 474. This widespread use underlines its importance for modern, cross-border rail freight transport. Thanks to its high performance, multi-system capability and robust technical design, the Siemens ES64F4 is one of the most important electric locomotives in European rail freight transport and contributes significantly to the efficiency and interoperability of the international rail network.
